What does success mean to you? You can think of success in many ways, it comes from many things, from something big or small. Success is defined differently by all people. I see it in many ways, to me it’s getting a good grade on a test, accomplishing something I thought I couldn’t, winning, or even finishing a show. There are many people out there who define success as making someone proud. They want to be successful or make an accomplishment to make their parents proud or someone else. Making someone proud of your accomplishments can be hard, depending on the person and on what you are doing. I am one of those people, I see success as making my parents proud. But why?

Well, to start off I don’t want them to see me as a failure or a disappointment. My parents showed me that you can start from scratch and build your way up, that you have to work hard for what you want, seeing them now it’s amazing knowing what they did to get where they are and get me where I am. They came here from another country to give my sisters and me a better life and I want to repay it to them, I want them to be proud of my successes, I want to show them that what they went through was worth it and not a waste. Being the older sibling is another reason why I want to make them proud. It may seem dumb but not to me. Being the older sibling can be hard, your parents expect you to be the best, they expect you to be the role model of the family. Being Hispanic puts more pressure on you, higher expectations, trying to make them proud of you, or at least trying to not disappoint them. It feels like I have to be the ¨perfect child¨, getting good grades, not messing up, and becoming successful in life.

Making them proud of their first-born daughter is my one of the biggest things I want to succeed at. I want to work hard to become successful in life and go far, I want them to be proud of what I did and I want to repay them for everything they did. That’s the big meaning of success to me, making my parents proud.
